Skill-based matchmaking in Fortnite has been a topic of much debate among the community. Epic recently added skill-based matchmaking SBMM to Fortnite, evening the playing field for both skilled and unskilled players. Now, extreme skill levels will no longer meet. There are pros and cons to the new skill-based matchmaking system, which need to be explored if Epic is considering implementing this across all modes. The first argument for skill-based matchmaking has to be that new players will have a better experience with the game. As much as the hardcore Fortnite players may hate it, Epic cares more about low-skilled, casual, returning, and new players more than they do about people who have been dedicated to this game for years. They want growth, and in order for their game to grow they need to keep players pouring in. Fortnite is already the most punishing game on the market for new players. With SBMM, these players will at least have a chance to learn the game and get better without a Soccer Skin trap killing them.

When so many players are invited to play the same games for long cycles, developers look to keep players invested in many different ways, which includes challenges, free loot, and satisfying, evolving gameplay. SBMM skill-based matchmaking is a system intended to pair players against other players of a similar skill level. Its main aim is to keep brand new players interested, rather than them going up against experienced players, losing heavily, and them being dissuaded from playing longer as a result.
One of the most famous examples of SBMM can be found in Fortnite, which added the system in September with bots not far behind. It only seems to have become an issue as players have grown better and fewer new players are joining the game. The reason why some people hate SBMM is actually very simple: they want to feel like they are a great player while also having fun.
Speaking of playing casually, this is another point of contention with those who dislike SBMM. This directly ties into content creation, which is more difficult when opposition is of a similar skill level. This has been seen pretty prominently in Fortnite. Creators like CourageJD and TimtheTatman have been discouraged from playing the game again due to the rough re-adjustment period.

Skill-based Matchmaking SBMM has, without a doubt, consistently been one of the most controversial topics in the Call of Duty community. Because answering SBMM-related questions could risk compromise the likely complex algorithms at work, Call of Duty developers rarely publicly comment on specifics. TheXclusiveAce and Drift0r pooled their efforts to play across six accounts in different skill brackets and record the data in a massive doc.
Each one alternated between three accounts; one on the low-end, another average, and one extremely competitive. To perform this test, both recorded the stats of the players they ran into, as well as the connection quality ping to the servers hosting these matches. To avoid the inconsistencies of the in-game ping tracker, the pair used Netduma routers to directly ping the host server. Their findings were illuminating. First, neither have found any evidence that matchmaking assigns higher priority to player skill over ping to server.
